Mal – Embriaguez Divina
Choreography by Marlene Monteiro Freitas
Marlene Monteiro Freitas, an artist born in Cape Verde, is one of Europe’s most sought-after choreographers, playfully blending elements of the Cape Verdean carnival, ancient myths, key works of European art history, and elements of contemporary pop culture. In her 2020 work MAL – EMBRIAGUEZ DIVINA, Freitas explores the ambivalence of “evil.” The piece captivates the ensemble and transforms precise, highly musical dance into a toxic, grandiose, and grotesque spectacle. The stage becomes a place where creativity, ecstasy, and upheaval merge into a divine intoxication.

For Monteiro Freitas is one of the most unconventional theater makers of our time: a drill instructor whose strictly formalized works are reminiscent of the productions of a veteran director twice her age.
